Quito Botanical Garden
Easy half day of birding in Quito’s central park for a quick acquaintance with the urban and rural birds of Ecuador’s capitol city. Beautifully designed gardens – with identified plants - and easy walking right in the city’s center.
The Quito botanical garden, in the heart of Quito’s Carolina Park, serves as a nice introduction to some of the more common central valley birds, as well as some interesting migrants (during the right season). Regularly seen species include Great Thrush, Sparkling Violetear, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Black Flowerpiercer, Cinereous Conebill, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Scrub Tanager, and Golden Grosbeak are all regulars. Giant Hummingbird can sometimes be seen in and around the gardens as well, while rarities such as Stygian Owl have even been known to turn up on day roosts from time to time. We will bird the garden for around 3 hours.
