Short week of birding featuring the paramos of Antisana National Park and two comfortable and legendary Andean lodges on the upper slopes of the Amazon drainage.
This tour, kicking things off on the first morning with a visit to the paramos of Antisana National Park, is almost entirely devoted to birding riches of the eastern Andes highlands and puts you right in the heart of some of the most biodiverse habitats these areas have to offer while staying in comfort and enjoying excellent food at Guango and San Isidro Lodges. As you wind through the Andes – rising and falling in elevation – you will be overwhelmed with how much the scenery and the birds change altitudinally, from the dry central valley scrub and the high treeless paramo, to the lush cloud-forests of the temperate and subtropical life-zones. Hummingbird feeders that swarm with an array of dazzling species, colorful mountain-tanagers and even a couple of antpittas, are all strengths of this east-slope sampler. So many birds are possible, but how about Black-faced Ibis, Andean Condor, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Mountain Avocetbill, White-bellied Antpitta, White-capped Tanager, and even a mystery species of owl at San Isidro right from the porch? This route also affords good opportunities to observe Spectacled Bear, Culpeo Fox and Mountain Tapir.
